Nació el 12 de agosto de 1954 en Lee`s Summit, Missouri. Su hermano, el trompetista Mike Metheny, lo inició en el jazz. Después estudió con Wes Montgomery y Charlie Christian. Cuando tenía quince años ya tocaba regularmente con los mejores músicos de jazz de su ciudad y consiguió una beca para asistir a centros musicales auspiciados por la revista Downbeat y luego entró, también becado, a la Universidad de Miami, donde también fue profesor.
En la Universidad conoce al bajista Jaco Pastorius y en 1975, junto al baterista Bob Moses grabaron, bajo el nombre de Pat Metheny, el disco Bright Size Life, para el sello ECM. Después el vibrafonista Gary Burton, le propone unirse a su banda. Dos años después, con el tecladista Lyle Mays, Mark Egan y Dan Gottlieb, se forma El Pat Metheny Group, donde fusionan jazz y folk. Los coqueteos del grupo con el rock y con el pop, causó rechazo entre los puristas.
En 1984 dejó el sello ECM y pasó a grabar para Emi primero y para Geffen después. Pat Metheny Group, ha sido el único grupo que ha obtenido siete premios Grammy consecutivos. Ha recibido incontables distinciones como Mejor Guitarrista de Jazz y catorce premios Grammy en las más diversas categorías: Mejor Rock Instrumental, Mejor Disco de Jazz Contemporáneo, Mejor Solo Instrumental de Jazz y Mejor Composición Instrumental.
